Is gold a hedge? The relation between gold and shares

Mestrado em FinançasNum período em que uma estratégia de investimento cuidadosa e diligente é cada vez mais necessária, o hedging é uma poderosa ferramenta que pode ser usada pelos investidores com o propósito de reduzir os riscos associados aos investimentos no mercado de ações. Este projecto tem como objectivo estudar a correlação entre os retornos do ouro e os retornos das ações, com o intuito de descobrir se o ouro pode ser considerado um hedge para as ações ou um safe haven. Os resultados do uso de um modelo econométrico, baseado em dados de alguns dos maiores índices a nível mundial e de um índice de rastreamento de referência para futuros de ouro, para o período de Janeiro de 1996 até Dezembro de 2015, sugerem que o ouro não é um hedge para qualquer dos mercados de ações analisados, ainda que aparente ser um forte safe haven sobre condições extremas de retornos negativos do mercado de ações. Ainda assim, é demonstrado que os resultados do modelo econométrico estão dependentes do período analisado.In a period where careful and diligent investing is increasingly required, hedging is a powerful weapon that can be used by investors in order to reduce the risks associated with stock market investments. This project aims at studying the correlation between gold returns and stock returns, intending to find out if gold can be considered a hedge for stocks or a safe haven. The results of the use of an econometric model, based on data from some major worldwide stock indexes and a benchmark tracking index for gold futures, regarding the period from January of 1996 until December of 2015, suggest that gold is not a hedge for any of the stock markets under analysis but it appears to be a strong safe haven under extreme negative stock market conditions. Longitudinal analysis of soleus muscles of rats submitted to passive stretching with previous use of therapeutic ultrasound

O alongamento muscular é muito difundido entre atletas e pessoas envolvidas em atividades físicas, além de procedimento rotineiro em clínicas de fisioterapia, principalmente visando o aumento na flexibilidade. O ultrassom terapêutico possui ações térmicas e atérmicas, o que gera possibilidades de aumento de extensibilidade tecidual e metabolismo celular, e pode auxiliar nos efeitos anabólicos do alongamento estático. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os efeitos do alongamento passivo estático em músculo sóleo esquerdo (MSE) de ratos, associado ao uso do ultrassom terapêutico, sobre alterações longitudinais do tecido muscular. Foram utilizados 42 ratos Wistar, divididos em grupos tratados com ultrassom terapêutico com doses térmicas e não, e subsequente alongamento estático em três séries de 30s, além de grupos apenas tratados com ultrassom ou alongados, durante 15 dias de tratamento. Foram comparadas as variações encontradas entre o MSE e o MSD de cada grupo. As variáveis foram: comprimento muscular, estimativa de sarcômeros em série na fibra e ao longo do músculo, e comprimento de sarcômeros. Os resultados das variáveis analisadas apontaram alterações no comprimento muscular de repouso nos grupos em que foi associado ultrassom terapêutico, em dose térmica, ao alongamento estático, mas para as outras variáveis analisadas não houve diferenças significativas. Conclui-se que o alongamento passivo estático e o uso associado do ultrassom terapêutico, de forma térmica, produziram apenas aumento no comprimento muscular em repouso.Muscular stretching is much diffused among athletes and people involved in physical activities, besides being a routine procedure in physiotherapy clinics, mainly aiming at flexibility increase. The therapeutic ultrasound possesses thermal and non-thermal effects, which generate possibilities of tissue extensibility and cellular metabolism increase and can aid in static stretching anabolic effects. The aim of this study was to analyze the static passive stretching effects in left soleus muscle (LSM) of rats, associated to the therapeutic ultrasound use on muscular tissue longitudinal alterations. Forty-two Wistar rats, divided in therapeutic ultrasound treated groups, with thermal and non-thermal doses, and subsequent static stretching in 3 sets of 30 s, besides groups just treated with ultrasound or stretched, for 15 days were used. The variations found between LSM and RSM of each group were compared. The variables were: muscular length, serial sarcomere estimation in the fiber and along the muscle, and sarcomere length. The analyzed variables results showed alterations in rest muscular length in the groups with therapeutic ultrasound in thermal dose associated to static stretching. However, there were not significant differences for the other analyzed variables. It is concluded that static passive stretching associated to therapeutic ultrasound in thermal dose just produced increase in rest muscular length

Numerical study of fatigue crack initiation and propagation on optimally designed cruciform specimens

A new generation of smaller and more efficient biaxial fatigue testing machines has arrived on the market. Using electrical motors these machines are not able to achieve the higher loads their hydraulic counterparts can, and therefore the cruciform specimen needs to be optimized Following the authors previous work, several different optimal specimens' configurations were produced, using the base material sheet thickness as the main design variable. Every design variable was optimized in order to produce the highest stress level on the specimen center, while the stress distribution is still uniform on a 1 mm radius of the specimen center. Also it was guaranteed that the stress level on the specimen arms was always considerably lower, in order to achieve failure at the specimen center. In this paper traditional criteria like Findley, Brown-Miller, Fatemi-Socie, Smith, Watson e Topper (SWT), Liu I and Chu were considered to determine crack initiation direction for several loads in this biaxial in-plane specimens. In order to understand the fatigue propagation behavior, the stress intensity factors for mode I and mode II was determined for different cracks introduced on the geometry. Several crack and loading parameters were studied, including the starting crack length and angle, and different loading paths. The international research of academic economists in Brazil: 1999-2006

This paper extends Faria (2000) analysis to the period of 1999-2006. The study analyzes the production of 750 Brazilian academic economists from 31 departments of economics with graduate programs. At individual level, only 12 out of 750 economists managed to publish at least one paper in the top journals of economics, and 96 economists published at least one paper in a wide list of international journals. The areas in which Brazilian research is most internationally successful are: Applied Economics, Development Economics, Mathematical Economics and Post-keynesian Economics. There is a remarkable difference in quality among departments. The performance of departments depends on isolated individuals efforts and achievements. The results show that Brazilian academic research in economics has improved. The total numbers of international papers published, of researchers publishing in international journals, and departments with members with international publications have increased during this period.Este paper estende a análise de Faria (2000) para o período de 1999-2006. O estudo analisa a produção de 750 economistas acadêmicos de 31 departamentos de economia com programas de pós-graduação no Brasil. Ao nível individual, somente 12 economistas conseguiram publicar pelo menos um artigo nas revistas acadêmicas mais importantes da profissão, e 96 economistas publicaram pelo menos um artigo nas revistas da lista de revistas internacionais. As áreas de pesquisa em que os brasileiros são mais bem sucedidos são: Economia Aplicada, Desenvolvimento Econômico, Economia Matemática e Economia Pós-Keynesiana. Há uma diferença marcante de qualidade entre os departamentos. A performance dos departamentos depende de esforços isolados de indivíduos. O número total de artigos publicados, de pesquisadores publicando em revistas internacionais e departamentos com membros publicando em revistas internacionais, cresceu durante o período

Depressão e patologia psicossomática

Procurámos neste artigo investigar se uma doença psicossomática pode surgir no lugar de uma depressão, impossível de ser vivida e elaborada pelo indivíduo. De acordo com Coimbra de Matos e Pierre Marty na raiz da doença somática está uma depressão precoce, anterior aos seis meses de idade, sem objecto. Será esta mesma personalidade que nos períodos de crise irá fazer uma depressão falhada, uma depressão sem depressão psíquica mas com depressão biológica, sobretudo ao nível do aparelho imunitário. Sami-Ali considera que se existiu um recalcamento ele opera desde a primeira infância, tornou-se coextensivo ao sujeito, o que lhe permitiu adaptar-se socialmente, abstraindo-se daquilo que é enquanto subjectividade. A ausência da subjectividade dá lugar a uma depressão caracterial, ficando a somatização dependente de uma situação de impasse.ABSTRACT: In this article we aimed to investigate whether a psychossomatic disorder can arise instead of a depression, unable to be experienced and performed by the idividual. According to Coimbra de Matos and Pierre Marty, underneath the somatic illness lies an early depression, that took place before the individual reached the 6 months old, without the object. This seems to be the same kind of personality that in crisis periods will develop a failed depression, a depression whithout psychic depression, with no mental representation, but with a biological expression, mainly through the immune system. Sami-Ali believes that if repression ocurred, it operates since early childhood, becoming commensurate to the subject, which enabled him to fit in socially, leaving its own subjectivity behind. The absence of subjectivity, leads to the formation of a caracterial depression, in which somatization is dependent on a state of deadlock

O presente artigo tem por objetivo desenvolver uma reflexão crítica sobre o sentido e alcance do principio da livre iniciativa no direito brasileiro. Num primeiro momento, busca-se compreender a origem da livre iniciativa e sua evolução ao longo da história, bem como seu sentido no texto constitucional brasileiro. Em seguida, busca-se demonstrar, mediante a análise de determinados julgamentos paradigmáticos, como a jurisprudência do Supremo Tribunal Federal compreende a livre iniciativa

O DESENVOLVIMENTO DO CONCEITO DE METACONTINGÊNCIA

This article describes the development of the concept of metacontingency. Three further complementations of Glenn’s original proposal in 1986 are identified: 1) emphasis on the selective process of many interlocking behavioral contingencies and on the transmission of behavior patterns through time; 2) the description of different environment effects produced by a set of interlocking behavior contingencies and 3) a distinction between processes of variation and selection occurring at individual level of analysis (macrocontingencies) and processes of variation and selection occurring at cultural level of analysis (metacontingencies).Key words: selection by consequence, metacontingency, interlocking behavioral contingencies, aggregatedproduct, macrocontingency.O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar o desenvolvimento do conceito de metacontingência. Identificou-se três reformulações subseqüentes à idéia primeiramente apresentada por Sigrid Glenn no artigo Metacontingencies in Walden II, de 1986: 1) ênfase no processo seletivo do entrelaçamento de muitos operantes e, conseqüentemente, na transmissão de padrões comportamentais através do tempo; 2) a descrição das funções de diferentes efeitos ambientais produzidos pelo entrelaçamento; e 3) diferenciação entre processos de variação e seleção que ocorrem em nível individual (relações de macrocontingência) e processos de variação e seleção que ocorrem em nível cultural (relações de metacontingência). Uses of ERP systems and their influence on controllership functions in Brazilian Companies

Controllership and Information Technology provide ways for companies to adapt to the competitive context of business environments. As such, the aim of this research is to identify and analyze the impacts of ERP systems on Controllership functions, verifying the relationships between the use of solutions and possible improvements in such functions. The need for management control and operations control were observed. This research is descriptive and exploratory of the survey kind. The subjects mentioned in this research are managers involved in Controllership activities in large companies from the Auto Parts sector in the State of São Paulo. The data obtained through a questionnaire by non-probabilistic samples were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics. According to the subjects, ERP systems modify Controllership functions and better serve the control needs of the operations. The results showed problems to be overcome in management control
